History:
John E. McCulloch was a singer-songwriter from Montana. McCulloch was afflicted with blindness from a young age after developing hydrocephalus. His parents moved him to Bozeman, Montana to see a specialist and receive medical assistance that ultimately saved his life. McCulloch began to learn guitar and started writing gospel songs while in high school.
McCulloch set out to record a full length album in 1979. The album titled "He Put A New Song In My Mouth" contained mostly original songs. The music itself is acoustic folk rock with Ed Halvorson contributing some tasteful lead guitar and bass guitar. Elvorson’s prominent use of a volume pedal gives some of the songs a psychedelic tinge. McCulloch played acoustic rhythm guitar and sang both lead and backing vocals. Sharon Saw played piano on the track "So Many Things".
McCulloch went to university in his 20's where he graduated with a degree. However, tragedy struck when McCulloch was hit by a truck. The accident left him paralyzed and in a care home to this day. His father wrote a book about the tragedy that is available on Amazon.
He Put A New Song In My Mouth (1979, Not On Label)
Rating: 6.5/10
A solid acoustic / folk rock album with nice arrangements and solid vocals. The overly preachy lyrics is what brings the experience down a bit. I do like McCulloch's vocals especially when he provides backing. Cool voice.
Lots of untapped potential on display with tunes like "Birds" and "I Am" showcasing a sort of christian hippie sound. Halvorson's lead guitar work is really great. Restrained and simple but effective with really good soloing. His bass work is great too. McCulloch is a pretty good rhythm guitarist considering his disability.
Lots of close to great cuts on here. Nothing insanely great and nothing bad. Just a good slab of gospel / folk rock. I truly feel awful for McCulloch. He suffered through so much tragedy and this album showed he had a lot more to offer. It's a real shame he didn't get a chance to improve on his music.
