Ron And Shirley
History:
Ron and Shirley were a christian rock duo from southern New Jersey. Not much is known about Shirley Bristle. She was a singer and most likely a folk guitarist. Ron Russo's past is more clear.
Russo grew up in New Jersey and became a musician. His main instrument was rhythm guitar. At some point inthe early 70's, Russo was the lead singer in a psychedelic rock band called Ocean. Russo struggled with heavy drug use during this period and eventually turned to christianity and overcame his addiction.
Russo still wanted to make music, so he began writing christian themed rock music. Ron joined forces with Shirley at some point and recruited a backing band to support them. The power trio they chose was named Universe and consisted of bassist Jack DeLuca, lead guitarist and keyboardist Tom Boyer, and drummer Jay Baccile. Russo played a multitude of rhythm guitars, including 6 and 12 string acoustic as well as electric. Shirley played some rhythm guitar too.
The quintet went to C&C Sound Studios in Glassboro to record a full album. Russo wrote most of the material as well as handling production, arranging, and mixing duties. Bill Anderer heavily assisted Russo in making the album a reality by playing keyboards and co-arranging the tunes. The album features nine tracks total. The A-Side flows as a long medley with some sound effects linking tunes together. Some tracks were based on scripture while others are purely original. Bristle co-wrote two ballads on the album.
A multitude of others assisted Ron and Shirley in making the album. John Houpt played drums on several tracks on the album. Debbie Johnson and Vince Ettore contributed backing vocals to a track or two. Charles Gallager played saxophone on two songs and Mike Roberts handled the piano duties on "Backslider". The album was released in 1977 as "Rock and Scroll" and sold pretty well locally. Many copies came with lyric sheet inserts and promotional flyers.
The duo did not make anymore recordings after this. Ron Russo relocated his ministry to Florida where he continued making christian rock music. He still lives there today and is currently a minister and Elvis impersonator. He also does comic work and entertainment for seniors. I couldn't find any info on Shirley Bristle's wherabouts.
Review:
Rock And Scroll (1977, C&C Recordings)
Rating: 7/10
A really good christian rock album, probably the most consistent I've heard. Side A flows like a medley with most tracks being acoustic guitar driven rockers. "Soul Winner" is a soul track with an odd chord progression and loud sax. Not really for me but I see why some like it. The folk rock medley that follows it is extremely solid. "Sealer Healer" is a nice psychedelic folk tune with light percussion, mellotron, and acoustic guitars. Nice vocals and good lead guitar courtesy of Russo. I like the trippy effects too. "Christian Man" is my favorite off of the recording . It has some funny lyrics ("Regardless if your a businessman or the length you keep your hair") but has some more great acoustic guitar and vocals. That song features both drummers for some reason and is a bit sloppy.
"The Troubled Sea" is another good song with some more mellotron on the flute setting and trippy guitar work. Good tempo shift towards the chorus which keeps things interesting. "Jude" is the poppy conclusion of the A-Side but it's a still solid tune.
Side B is very mediocre but consistent in it's sound. I am not a fan of any of the tunes save for "Comforter" which a 70's pop ballad with some wah wah. I despise "Love Is Real" mainly due to the duo's abrasive vocals. "Bad Love Is A Demon" is okay, especially the great metal introduction. Goofy synthesizer effects and not so great backing vocals tarnish that one for me.
