Wayne Henegar
History:
Wayne Henegar was a gospel musician based in Lexington, Kentucky. There isn’t much known about Henegar online. His real name is actually Leland, but he took his middle name professionally. Henegar was possibly a studio musician for the Crusade Enterprises label. He is credited on only one known release titled “Fill My Cup Lord”, a traditional no-nonsense gospel album. He played bass on that LP. He released his only solo album “Someone Is Watching Over Me” probably in 1973. The album features a blending of many different genres, including traditional gospel, country, folk, and pop. The album only has one original song and features “musical assistance” from Henegar’s wife Marilyn, Fran Wallar, and gospel freak / multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Bill Casolari. If my research is correct, Wayne is alive and well living in Florida.
Review:
Someone Is Watching Over Me (1973, Not On Label)
Rating: 3/10
Review: This album is a mess for several reasons. The first is the different ways Henegar approaches his vocals. For a third of the album, Henegar sings in a really low bass register. Those tracks are atrocious. Another third of the album is generic gospel music, very safe and very “missionary position” as ibuyoldrecords says. There are three songs on this album that delve into the folk rock space that are pretty good: “Good News” is the show-stealer. The song is actually mis-titled, as it is actually called "Truly Julie's Blues (I'll Be There)". Good drums, great vocals, and phenomenal guitar work. “Living Circle” is nice with good violin and flute backing. “You’ve Got A Friend” (a song that literally everybody covered on vanity / private press albums) is also done well. Pretty brutal album saved by a few good cuts.
